The Bombardier Learjet 36 is an iconic light jet that enjoyed a production run of over 20 years. Along with the Learjet 35, the aircraft is renowned for its superb range, fast speeds and luxurious cabin.

About this aircraft

  • The Learjet 36 is a light jet that was produced from 1973 to 1993.
  • Along with the Learjet 35, it’s one of the most recognisable Learjet models.
  • There’s space for up to six passengers, but many configurations only allow for four.
  • The baggage hold is large enough for one suitcase per passenger if six people are travelling.
  • The passenger area is shorter than the 35’s, but the aircraft has a greater range.
  • Like the 35A, the 36A has upgraded engines and a higher maximum gross weight.

The Bombardier Learjet 36 is almost identical to the Learjet 35. Of the two, the 36 is the longer-range variant with greater fuel capacity but less seating. Both models were granted FAA certification in July 1974, while the 35A and 36A were introduced in 1976.

Interior design

The Learjet 36 has a slightly shorter cabin than the 35, measuring 10ft 6in long, 4ft 11in wide and 4ft 4in tall. Designers sacrificed cabin capacity to allow for a larger fuselage fuel tank, with a maximum of six passengers instead of eight on the 35.

A refreshment centre is normally positioned along the port sidewall, while the lavatory is located in the forward cabin next to the airstair door. For those under six feet tall, there’s ample headspace when moving around the cabin.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • Despite its age, there are still hundreds of Learjet 36s in service around the world so they’re usually readily available to charter.
  • The aircraft is particularly well-known for its high cruising speed, saving precious time for clients with tight schedules.
  • Its relatively low weight and two powerful engines allow the Learjet 36 to land on short runways at regional airports, making it a popular medevac aircraft.

Technological features

The Learjet 36 is powered by two Garrett TFE731-2-2B turbofan engines for 3,500 lbs of thrust, a relatively low fuel burn and high cruise speeds.

While the Learjet 36 originally featured analogue displays, the upgraded 36A came with Collins nav/comm/ident radios in duplicate as standard. It also had a Collins EFIS package with right- and left-side primary flight displays and optional equipment like a large centre multi-function display, colour weather radar and FMS.

History

When Bombardier set out to upgrade the Learjet 25 to stretch its length and add a pair of Garrett turbofan engines, the manufacturer inadvertently created two of its most successful private jets: the Learjet 35 and 36.

The 36 was designed as the longer-range variant, with greater fuel capacity than the 35 but fewer seats onboard. Additional upgrades led to the Learjet 35A and 36A launching in 1976, two years after their predecessors were granted FAA certification.

The Learjet 35 and 36 are renowned for their speed and range in the light jet market. Their ability to travel non-stop across much of the US means they’re still popular charter jets today.

Manufacturer

Bombardier Aviation is a leading global producer of business, commercial and specialised aircraft. The company began with the acquisition of several established aviation manufacturers and now has over 60,000 employees in 25 countries around the world.
