COUNTRY GUIDE CROATIA

Private jet charter to Croatia

The Adriatic coastline is Croatia’s main draw, with its sandy beaches and unique seaside towns dotted with buildings dating back to Roman times and the Renaissance. This beautiful country is home to 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ancient cities of Split and Dubrovnic; while capital city Zagreb is the country’s cultural and commercial hub, with designer shopping, world-class museums and a lively arts scene. The Croatian Riviera is made up of 3,600 miles of coastline along the Adraitic Sea, from Istria in the north to Dalmatia in the south. The peninsula of Istria is loved for its largest city, Pula, and dramatic Roman amphitheatre, in addition to the ancient Roman town of Poreč with its sixth-century Euphrasian Basilica.

Also popular are the pretty beaches of Novigrad and Rovinj on the western coast. Rovinj has a heavy Italian influence and its Venetian-style houses, elegant piazzas and upmarket harbour attract a stylish crowd. Here you can explore the Old Town’s art studios and harbour and relax on Lone Beach, a 30-minute walk a from the centre. Another historic town is Opatija, which was the favourite holiday destination for the Austro-Hungarian elite in the 19th Century.

Dalmatia encompasses Dubrovnic, Split and the islands of Brac, Cres, Hvar, Sibenik, Korčula, Krk, Lošinj and Mljet. A great way to see the Dalmatian islands is on a luxury seven-day island cruise, however if you choose to remain on terra firma, the most luxurious hotels and grand seafront villas are located in Dubrovnic and around Hvar. Several hotels are located on tiny islands only reachable by boat.

The mixture of Roman, Gothic and Renaisssance architecture is what makes Dubrovic so special. Founded in the seventh century, the city is rich in history. The Dubrovnic Summer Festival is a great time to visit, with jazz and classical music echoing through the city’s ancient walls. In addition to the beaches and chic bars and eateries found on the islands, it’s well worth visiting Hvar Town, with its palaces and chapels. The island of Korčula is steeped in stunning natural scenery, with olive groves and verdant vineyards where you can spend the day wine tasting. Wander around medieval Korčula Town and visit the nearby secluded beach at Pupnatska Luka. Split, the second largest city in Croatia, is famous for Diocletian's Palace – a complex built by the Romans in the fourth century.

The northern Dalmation island of Lošinj, with its colourful fishing towns, is perfect if you want to escape the crowds in high season as no direct international flights fly there. The harbour here is beautiful, along with the hidden beaches shaded by pine tree forests. There are four five-star hotels on the island, boasting luxury spas and restaurants overlooking the sea.

Capital city Zagreb offers Croatia’s best shopping, museums and restaurants. Head to the Oktogon Arcade for upmarket shopping, where you’ll find luxury items in a 19th-century arcade with a stained-glass dome. The main shopping street is Ilica, which is home to all the usual international stores plus a few homegrown brands. Recently, the emergence of design-led boutiques, such as I-GLE and Roba, has put Croatia on the fashion map.

Plitvice Park and the Dinaric Alps are the country’s most beautiful natural landscapes. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Plitvice Lakes, 16 lakes formed from run-off from the mountains with glistening waters and cascading waterfalls.
